2.3 and Steamworks! Old News But New to Some!

Greetings all,
I have some great news from the PVK front! Valve has been very generous and helpful in allowing us access to the Steamworks technology, which we will be releasing 2.3 on. For those of you who don't already know, Steamworks will allow us to release the mod directly through Steam, including future updates which you can download automatically.
Although there's no release date planned, this is great news for all of us. It will make updating the mod a breeze as well as allow us to implement a wonderful system of achievements. We've already got over a hundred achievements planned for 2.3 and will see even more as future patches release!
In other 2.3 news, we have successfully ported over to the Orange Box engine. There are still some tweaks to make in different areas, but the bugs have been squashed. So far the Orange Box engine has offered us a ton of new features, some of which include:
- Objective-Based Scoring
- Kill Assists
- New Particle System
- Expressions
and much, much more..

Another feature we've got implemented is Color Correction. In 2.3 when a player goes Berserk, holds the Grail, or is close to death, they will see the world in a new way. Examples are posted below:

Last but certainly not least, we have implemented the Gestir class for the Vikings. He'll be carrying around a Langseax, a Spear and Javelins. He's undergoing testing now and more information will be available to you in the future.
Keep an eye open for more news on 2.3. We've got tons of features planned, this is only the tip of the iceberg!

Empires 2.2 Is Here

After 6 months in development, Empires 2.2 is finally ready for release. 2.2 features many improvements and changes, ranging from big changes, like the move over to the Orange Box Engine to minor visual tweaks, like proper camo for infantry models, with Arctic, Urban and Woodland variations.

    New Brenodi Camouflage

    Northern Faction Camouflage

Additionally, 2.2 features many gameplay and balance changes, most notably changes to Railguns, Mines, Heavy Tanks and Nuclear Warheads.

Furthermore, infantry weapons have been reworked and redesigned. Most notably the Brenodi Assault Rifle features a 3-round burst firemode and consequently has been renamed as Brenodi Assault Carbine. In addition to that the special issue Brenodi Machine Pistol has made it's way into the standard loadout for Brenodi Riflemen and Grenadiers, so they now have a 3-round burst pistol for close range engagements.

And, of course, no Empires update can be complete without bugfixes. Just to mention two nasty ones: Nuke Heat Bug and regenerative armor’s inexplicable resistance to bio weapons.

That being said, many thanks go out to the 2.2 testers for helping track down the bugs caused by the Orange Box port in well over a dozen testing sessions.

Apart from changes to the mod itself the development team, too, had to go through changes during this 6 month period. First and foremost Krenzo, creator and lead coder of Empires has left the team and passed the project lead on to FalconX.

For more in detail descriptions refer to the 2.2 Changelog.

    Download Empires 2.2

For all other players please note, that due to the port over to the Orange Box Engine, Empires 2.2 will require players to have the “Source SDK Base – Orange Box” installed. This new SDK Base is available in Steam via the “Tools” tab. You do not need to own an Orange Box game for Empires 2.2 to work, any Source game will still suffice.

If you are new to empires there is an up to date Quickstart Guide available: Quickstart Guide

Just to let everyone know that the cut-off date for bonus features in SC4.0 is coming up soon. This is not a request for extra donations -- no need to donate unless you want to -- but if you were already intending to, I'd suggest you do so before next weekend (by the 12th of December) to ensure that you receive your electric crowbar/gold Uzis/new secret bonus in SC4.0.

Alternately, if you've already donated but did not receive a reply saying "Steam ID added" or similar, please re-send your Steam ID to me with any details that might allow me to find you in the list, like the e-mail address used when donating. (If you did get a reply saying your Steam ID had been added, you're fine, and don't need to do anything).

IMPORTANT: Steam IDs should look like this: STEAM_0:1:23456. They are different from your Steam username. Check this page for details on finding your Steam ID.

The real Dr. Gordon Freeman

CERN's Freeman Picks Up Crowbar from Gamers, Begins Saving the World
Half-Life

ShackHype

Back in September we reported on the sighting of a rather suspicious-looking scientist at CERN, the site of the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator, which was then in preparation for its historic first test. In the test chamber.

Sensing imminent invasion, alarmed gamers at Reddit took the initiative, mailing CERN a wrecking bar, headcrab hat and Half-Life strategy guide.
Left, the scientist in question. Right, world saving.
The Freeman doppelganger recently found his pickups, and proceeded to defend the facility from alien forces, evidence of which (above, right) was passed along today.

We await the inevitable news that our Freeman has abandoned the world to alien rule after giving up halfway through the Xen level.

They Hunger Co-op Announcement, Half-Life Give-away!

With ModDB recently posting a great "10 Years of Half-Life" video feature which included both They Hunger and Sven Co-op in its list of Top 5 third-party mods, it seemed like a good time to officially announce something that many of you may have already guessed at...
(Incidentally, "Quite possibly the best Half-Life mod of all time" is a pretty good quote. If we had a box, that'd be right on the front. Thanks ModDB -- your cheque is in the mail!)

The first episode of They Hunger Co-op is set to be included with the next Sven Co-op release, with the second following soon afterwards! Featuring numerous improvements in addition to co-operative multiplayer, it provides yet another incentive to re-play Black Widow Games' classic They Hunger series before its commercial follow-up They Hunger: Lost Souls comes out.

The images below show some of the changes that have been made to Episode 1. Note that we've been in contact with Neil Manke and the BWG team throughout development to ensure that it remains an authentic TH experience -- In fact, some changes actually bring it closer to their original vision.

Various sprites used for vegetation have been replaced with models, in addition to many other small visual improvements. The actual structure of the maps, story sequences etc. remain identical to the original, however.

Certain weapon models like the TH pistol and Thompson submachine gun (below) have been updated by Flewda. Weapons are replaced using SC4.0's new Global Model-Replacement system.

Outdoor lighting tends to be slightly darker, while the hard, inky shadows of the original are retained indoors. You can see Teddy's Zombie Otis in this shot, by the way. Being tougher than regular Zombie Cops, the addition of Otis helps to keep things challenging even with multiple players.

The TH Zombie Head (left) has been replaced with John Carpenter-style Headbugs (legs by Civilian^Soldier, assembled and animated by Peter Kavanaugh). Also, Shp!nx replaced the TH Snarks with an actual Zombie Rat. This brings them closer to what Black Widow Games originally had planned, but were forced to cut due to time constraints.

Sven Co-op's medkit looked out of place in They Hunger, so we made the syringe shown above (model by Peter Conneely, animated by Peter Kavanaugh). The green fluid is used for healing, while purple is used for revival. Note that players are also restricted to They Hunger player models on the TH maps via one of SC4.0's new customization features.

Check back for more They Hunger Co-op and Sven Co-op 4.0 news shortly.

Half-Life Give-away:

Valve was running a Steam special on Half-Life for its 10th birthday (it's still running at the time of writing, actually... if you're fast you might catch it). Seemed like a great chance for people to pick up an extra copy for a friend or relative to play Sven Co-op with -- or for people who, for whatever reason, actually haven't played it before -- but I thought it must be frustrating for those without access to a valid payment method.

So anyway, we have fifteen twenty-five or so copies of Half-Life to give away (we'll buy more if we can, but Steam has some sort of security feature that's preventing more than five purchases in a day). If you'd like one, just send us a brief note to explain why you can't easily get hold of one yourself. You don't need to be a starving orphan or anything, just something along the lines of "I don't have a credit card..." is OK. 'Prizes' will be delivered in the form of a Steam gift code (no physical copy). Obviously stocks are limited, so be quick.

Edit: The response to this has been much greater than I expected... I sort of assumed most people here would either have all the Half-Life they needed, or be able to buy from Steam, but apparently that's not the case. If anyone feels like donating 98 cents worth of Half-Life to needy fans: We'll then hand the code out to someone without the means to buy it themselves (or alternately, if you know of anyone, just send it to them directly instead). Obviously I don't expect this of anyone, it's just a cheap way to pass on the joy of Half-Life if you feel like it :). If you are going to do it, though, be quick -- the sale's supposed to be ending about now.

-Sven Viking

Add it to your cart on Steam (click here)
Choose "Buy as a Gift"
Choose "E-mail my Gift", and enter the e-mail address "contests@svencoop.com"
Complete the purchase as normal

It's Sven Co-op's 10th birthday pretty soon too, by the way. Looking like we should have a new version out before then.
